Hi, I’m Sharon Lau, a student majoring in Management and Marketing at Curtin University Malaysia.

Since high school, I have always been passionate about organizing events, therefore I am determined to pursue a successful career in event planning.

I grew up in Kota Kinabalu, a place which has one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Grow up in a country with different races and different cultures taught me many languages. I can speak Chinese, Malay, English, Cantonese and Hakka.

Growing up with 2 siblings, I always came up with some fun games to play with my siblings during my childhood. My main entertainment is watching movies with friends and family during the weekends. I also enjoy in playing badminton and jogging during my leisure time.

I have been learning how to organize and planning events since high school, because I have three years of experience as a class monitor in high school. As a class monitor, I need to create a good relationship with my classmates, and therefore I gained communication and interpersonal skills.

Because of my passion in organizing events, I also joined the volunteering activities at Curtin University Malaysia. The most interesting event I have participated in is Curtin Amazing Race, which requires all members to unite to make the event run smoothly and end in the particular time.

Last year, I had travel to Taiwan and learn about their cultures. It is always a pleasure to travel around, looking at other cities and countries, and broaden our eyes and minds.

Education
Education

High School (2011-2016):

In 2011, I received a scholarship and studied in Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School. I was glad to be elected and appointed as Class Monitor during my high school. Since then, I have discovered and developed my leadership skills and provided help to my classmates when there are any questions that require clarification and guidance.

Curtin University Malaysia (2017-Present):

I joined Curtin with Foundation studies in Commerce in 2017, and chose to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Curtin, due to their outstanding reputation and remarkable achievements in the recent years.

I decided to pursue a double major in Management and Marketing because both degrees allow me to apply my leadership skills and also combine with other knowledge I learned for businesses, such as working as team, creativity in brainstorming, coping with challenges, building circle of friends.

I participated a proposal pitching competition for a local cafe called "Chapter One" in 2018 with a bunch of friends. Although we did not win the competition, I learned about the marketing skills and how we need to be creative when making recommendations to real-world companies.

Experience
Experience

I have some experiences on organizing events, and it is contributed to having an experience in become a class monitor during my high school.  This has inspired me to seek for career opportunities in event planning and organizing events.

In starting the journey as a class monitor, I also elected and appointed as the Club President for Social Works Club during my high school. I organized some small events such as fund raising for old folks’ home, organized a small performance on Children's day for the orphanage children.

Being a class monitor encourage me to be a responsible person. Although I didn't really organize an event by myself, however I did participate in organizing a charity bazaar with my classmates during high school. Well-organized is important to the success of the event, therefore before performing the task, I was always responsible for distributing job to my classmates.

I also decided to participate in organizing Curtin Amazing Race event, I am determined to overcome the challenges we encountered during that time. The biggest challenge we encountered was the lack of sponsors’ support funds, and this event was about to be held, but my team members and I were still working hard to find sponsors. Eventually we successfully raised enough funds to enable us to continue the event .
